James Mitchell

James and Sandra Mitchell will be married 40 years on June 29, 2004. They have two sons Mark and Marlin and seven grandchildren. James is a deacon at St. Peter's Primitive Baptist Church in Detroit. When one of his sons (almost 20 years old) was on the basketball team at St. Martin De Pores High School, James would volunteer to help with the team. He was there everyday so the school offered him a job as the assistant athletic director and he coaches the boys' basketball team. He is out of the music business but still gets calls from new artists asking for advice about the music business. He gives them phone numbers of contacts that can help them advance their careers. Marvin Willis, who replaced Abrim in the "Ivory and James Emeralds," has a recording studio on 6 Mile Road in Detroit and James occasionally gives him advice also.

James reflected on the early days of the Detroit Emeralds. They used to rehearse at each others' homes. Both Abrim and James had two children, but Ivory had six children, so when they got to Ivory's home to rehearse, they had to do a lot of babysitting. Now all of the Emeralds' children are adults and so are some of their grandchildren.

He also remembered when they were considering forming the Detroit Emeralds how he and Abrim and their wives used to travel to other cities like Chicago and New York to see performers like James Brown. By the time the Emeralds emerged, many of the well-known artists knew them. As a matter of fact, the Emeralds' hit song, "Do Me Right" was written for James Brown on napkins when Abrim, James and Ivory were on the way to audition for James Brown. He wasn't there when they arrived, so the Emeralds kept the song for themselves.

Ivory Tilmon

Ivory Tilmon has been out of the music business for years but plans to go back to his gospel roots by the end of this year and start singing in the church again. He has been a truck driver for almost 10 years now, mainly driving locally but occasionally driving out of town. He has been married to Renaa for 30 years.  They have 6 children and 10 grandchildren.

None of the other siblings ever went into the music business as a profession, but they are musically talented and their children also inherited the Tilmon musical genes. One of their cousins, James Epps was the lead singer of the Fantastic Four. "The Whole World Is A Stage" was one of their biggest hits. James died last year. Some of the other family members sing and play organs in their churches and several cousins are pastors of churches in Detroit.
